Foxtail ferns are feathery, symmetrical shrubs that are surprisingly not ferns at all. They are actually related to asparagus! The name comes from the appearance of the fronds, which are compact, bushy, and soft looking.
Foxtail Ferns are Great for Beach Houses
Seaside plants are subjected to some tough conditions. The same elements that make a great day at the beach for you are not so great for your plants. Shifting sand, intense sun, and quick drainage all take their toll on plant life. But by far, the greatest consideration for plant health is sea salt. For seaside gardens and yards, you need salt-tolerant plants.
Despite their delicate appearance, these perennials are actually hardy plants that are drought resistant when established. They also have moderate salt tolerance, which make them ideal for Florida gardens, yards, and outdoor containers.
Foxtail Fern Care
These shrubs prefer light shade and slightly moist, well-draining soil. If grown in a container, allow the top 3 inches of soil to dry out between each watering.
Spring fertilization with a time-release 10-10-10 fertilizer will keep the slender leaves from yellowing. If the leaves do yellow, you can prune them back to improve the appearance and encourage new growth.
These shrubs produce small white flowers that become red berries. You can propagate more of these beautiful, interesting plants from the seeds inside the berries, or by dividing the existing plant in spring.
